In this video, photographer Lee Morris (co-founder of fstoppers.com) takes a look at Skylum’s Luminar 4 ability to easily remove shine or light reflections from a model’s face with one click.
As AI gets better and better it can save us more and more time doing complex work that would otherwise take a great deal of tedious effort. The new AI skin enhancer feature on the latest version of Luminar 4 seems to have a very advanced capability to remove unwanted shine or reflections from an image.
Using a slider you can choose to what degree you want to remove that shine and as Morris demonstrate (this is a sponsored video so you should always keep this in mind but watching some previous demos it looks legit), remove shine from several different portraits under different lighting conditions and on different skin tones.
Luminar 4 can also do a lot of other portraits enhancements using AI including eye whitening, coloring the lips, changing the face (making it more narrow/wide) and much more with a single slider. These are not always things that you want to do for each image but it can save time.
One of the most exciting aspects of this tool – at least to Morris (and possibly to quite a few event photographers as well) is the ability to not just affect a single person’s face in an image but a group of people.
Say that you have a wedding with many images of groups of people and they all have some flash reflections. Fixing that one by one in Photoshop can take a lot of time. Being able to do that with a single slider can be a huge time saver.
Skylum 4 starts at just under $90 (currently on a $25 discount).
We have covered many of the Luminar 4 AI-related capabilities here in the past including AI Structure which is essentially an advanced content-aware tool that automatically adds detail to an image but knows to avoid introducing excessive artifacts and details to people or other objects. We also covered AI Skin Enhancer and Portrait Enhancer and more recently we posted a real-world demo of sky replacement using the software.
