Susan Stripling: Should Photographers Pay Attention to Trends?

On this short video by CreativeLive wedding photographer Susan Stripling raises a simple yet intriguing question – should photographers pay attention to trends (more specifically photography trends).

Photography, and especially wedding photography has new trends all the time – they can be gimmicks (see for example the cool – Slow Motion Booth we covered here last year), or more basic trends (such as the move to shooting HDSLR videos in weddings).

Stripling position is that you always need to keep an eye on what is going on in the market, but as long as you have a strong technical base and your own vision, you should not really pay too much attention to passing trends.

Is this also the right call from a business standpoint? or maybe you should be more attentive to what is hot and trendy and make sure you at least suggest it to your clients? What do you think?

We have a full section devoted to becoming a professional photographer called “photography as a business” here on LensVid.
