During IBC 2023 we had a chance to talk to Karol Pietka from Irix about Irix Len’s new 65mm T1.5 Cine lens.
Irix 65mm T1.5 Cine
Last year in IBC we covered Irix Lens’ new 150mm Cine telephoto version (the original version was a macro) and the company’s new Irix Magnetic Matte Box.
One of the things promised to us by Pietka last year was lenses to bridge the gap between their 45mm lens and the 150mm. This year the first of these lenses was announced – the Irix 65mm T1.5 Cine lens. After this lens reaches the market the Irix Cine line will include the 11mm T4.3, 15mm T2.6, 21mm T1.5, 30mm T1.5, 45mm T1.5, the new 65mm T.15, and the two versions of the 150mm T3.
Like the rest of the line, the new 65mm T1.5 Cine is a FF weather-sealed lens, it has a similar size and weight (1.1kg) to some of the other lenses in the Irix line (especially the 30mm and 45mm). The lens has a unique feature that Irix developed which we have not seen on many lenses from other brands and that is a front magnetic filter system (on top of a normal 86mm threads and a 95mm mounting for a matte box).
As with other Irix lenses, the new 65mm T1.5 will come with a small detachable foot. One thing that Pietka mentioned in the interview at IBC was that you can also use the foot on the top part of the lens for accessories such as a mic (an interesting concept for a run and gun rig which we have yet to see in action).
Pricing and availability
The Irix 65mm T1.5 Cine lens should start selling in early 2024 (pricing will be announced closer to the actual official release).
