Nikon 85mm f/1.4G vs Nikon 85mm f/1.8G – Which is the Right Lens for You?

Photographer Matt Granger (aka ThatNikonGuy) published this interesting side by side comparison of two of the most popular Nikon portrait lenses – the  Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G and the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G.

As part of the review Granger shows some portrait shot examples taken with both lenses and ask the viewer to guess which was taken with which lens – can you tell which is which? – we certainly could and we feel that the 85mm f/1.4 has a distinct advantage – but is it worth the huge price difference? (the 85mm f/1.4 currently goes for about $1650 on B&H while the 85mm f/1.8 goes for under $500 – less than 1/3 the price).
