First Hands on with the Fujifilm GFX 100

Earlier today Fujifilm announced its long-anticipated Fujifilm GFX 100 – a 102MP medium format camera.

The Fujifilm GFX 100 was first shown on Photokina 2018 last year however at the time it was a fairly early pre-production model. The camera is not almost ready for full production and should be available on the market in late June 2019.

So what is so special about the Fujifilm GFX 100? there are apparently a number of innovations in this camera which we have not seen so far. First of all at this price range ($10K) there are no cameras that are even close to the 100MP mark. There are also no medium format cameras with built-in image stabilization (moving that huge sensor requires a very complex system).

There are some other very impressive features on this camera – it has a super high-resolution detachable angle changing EFV (with over 5.7 million dots) and a dual accessory screen on the top and the lower back (besides the 3.2″ main 2 million dots multi-angle monitor).

This camera also rocks some powerful video features including 4K at 30p (as well as DCI 4K 30p) with no time limit at up to 400mbs with 10bit 4:2:0 internal (4:2:2 through HDMI). It also has full sensor phase AF coverage and eye-tracking, the same pre-amps as the XT-3 (with mic and headphone jacks although the HDMI is micro for some reason).

The camera has two batteries in the lower grip (the body itself is made of magnesium and weather sealed) which are good for

The camera also supports dual UHS-2 SD cards, X-Processor 4, 5 fps Shooting, 16-Bit Raw output,

The body is about the size of a full body pro level full frame camera such as the Canon 1DX-II or Nikon D5. It weighs 3.08 lb / 1400 g (with Viewfinder) and you can use it vertically or horizontally (it has dual shutters) although reviewers didn’t seem to care for the design of the grip.

As mentioned before the camera is available for pre-order now for just under $10,000 and should on the market in a few weeks.
