Power Junkie V2 – Big Power Small Form Factor 12V, 9V and USB-C PD powered via L type batteries

Five years after the original model, U.K. company Blind Spot Gear announced the Power Junkie V2.  This new compact battery plate system uses Sony-style L-type batteries to provide power to different types of products including cameras, monitors, follow focus units but also some streaming units, and basically, almost any device that can be powered via 12V, 9V, or USB-C PD.

While you can find V-mount plates that can do more or less anything that the Power Junkie V2 can do (and then some) most are larger and more expensive but more importantly require v-mount batteries which are less affordable than their L-mount counterparts.

So what does the new version of the Power Junkie brings to the table compared to the previous one? First we have a big difference in connections. While the original Power Junkie had three output ports – a 2.5mm DC port (7.2V) and 2x USB-A and was charged via either USB-C or micro USB connection, the new Power Junkie V2 changes thing quite a bit.

Instead of these 3 connections, you now have a USB-C PD (9V 3A) for both charging and output, a 7-8.4V (3A) DC as well as a very useful 12V (2.5A) output.

Another interesting improvement is an on-off option (just long press the button on the left) as well as PD confirmation and warning indicator in case something is not right. From a design perspective, there is a more robust 1/4″ 20 in the center as well (and it even comes with a small adapter that you can use to connect a cable tie so you can attach the unit to almost anything.

Having a PD option on the device is good for another reason, it allows you to charge the L-type battery on the plate much faster.

There are now many new dummy batteries all based on USB-C PD for a range of cameras and manufacturers including Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Fujifilm, and Nikon.

One of the things which we find the most interesting is the addition of the 12V option (think of devices like the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro).

Pricing

The new Power Junkie V2 is currently offered on Kickstarter starting at just under $60.
